The Necklace and Other Short Stories - Guy de Maupassant I read many of Guy de Maupassant's works a few years ago in the original French—the only way to do it. de Maupassant's stories are short but they're full of life. The modern short story writer is no doubt indebted to him, and I imagine many screenwriters borrow liberally from his work. (Whether intentionally or not I cannot say.)
